Used Tractors
Choosing your tractor wisely.
*It pays to do your homework before you start looking for your tractor.
*The first tip is to work out your use of the tractor for example will it be used for mowing, slashing or towing or will it be used for ploughing and heavy use and what type of implements you will be using. That will decide the engine horsepower rating.
*Usually small blocks of land will require a low horsepower rating eg 18 to 30 and larger properties or acreages will require a higher horsepower rating eg 35 and upward.
*Most modern tractors are diesel engines with some fitted with turbochargers for increased torque to pull loads better.
*When choosing a tractor you must check the roll over protection mountings if fitted to an open type tractor.
*If hydraulics are fitted for a bucket or loader, make sure that hoses and connections have no leaks.
*Power take off and rear hydraulics should be working and a test with an implement
attached is recommended.
*As a guide to engine condition an hour meter is always useful to gauge the use
over the period of time in relation to the manufactured year.
*As tractor tyres can be expensive, check to see if they have no serious damage on the treads and have reasonable depth of tread left on for your situation.
*Check steering linkages for looseness and excessive wear. If power steering is fitted check there is no apparent leakage of oils around the unit.
*The electricals of a tractor are also important. Battery life can be reduced if the tractor has been standing for a long time. Check to see the wiring and cables are in good condition and not corroded or perished as wiring rubbing against the body of a tractor can cause shorting of the battery.
